Archbishop Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, was assassinated in the middle of mass on March 24, 1980, by a far-right commando. Defender of the landless peasants, who became an icon of the Latin American church, he was recognized as a martyr in 2015 and canonized on October 14, 2018.
