[…] Last Saturday (in a beautiful salon, Place des Vosges), I gave my lecture on Existential Fear before a large assembly of distinguished but rather mixed people: and the audience, it seems, was much more touched than I expected. Obviously, my very simple, aphilosophical, almost experimental Weltanschauung of a “Convergent Universe” is very attractive for a modern mind. I have of course had to emphasize once again my belief that the world would be a failure if anything “incommunicable” and “personalist” were to disappear from it; which means that, according to the cosmic structure, every loving center and every loving association of loving centers is irreversible, that is to say “immortal”, at least as far as the love it contains is concerned.
    Seen from this angle, love is biologically and physically the principle and measure of immortality. I think I will write something about it next spring (“The Heart of Matter”, you know). I have the strange feeling that I have never been so “fragile” in body (yet I feel very well), and at the same time so “strong” in spirit, as since I had these health problems two years ago. I tell you : we must rely on Life and on what is behind Life. The highest and most effective form of spiritual life is trust, – which is nothing but a different side of Love. […]
