You will find below an excerpt from a letter that Pierre Teilhard wrote to his friend Léontine Zanta.

On the banks of the Chara-ousso-gol (Eastern Ordos), 7 August 1923

“… When I travel by mule, I repeat, as in the past – for lack of another mass – the “mass on the World”, which you know, and I believe I say it with even more lucidity and conviction than before. What a beautiful host this old Asia is – a dead host, for the moment (I think) – but which carries, in its dust, the vestiges of such a long work, from which we now benefit! As I say to Marguerite, I have the impression, no longer of being at the front of a ship (as during the war), but at the back, leaning over the wake (I see the trace of what has passed): and this is still a way of perceiving the movement of the world. …”

Along the Chara-ousso-gol (Eastern Ordos) August 7 1923,

“…When riding a mule for whole days, as there is no other possible mass, I repeat as in the past the “Mass on the World” that you know and I think I do it even with more clarity and faith than I used to. What a beautiful host this old Asia is (a dead host for the moment, I think) but that carries in its dust the remains of such a long labour we are taking advantage of nowadays! As I say to Marguerite, I feel I am no longer at the front of a ship (like during the war), but at the back, leaning over the wake (I see the trace of what has passed): and it is another way to feel the movement of the world….”

Below is an excerpt from a card that Pierre Teilhard wrote to his friend Léontine Zanta
